View from Pipiapan
Today after I was finished with my sampling I took a siesta in the shade by the car while waiting to go home. After an hour of sleeping one of the employes at the station, Gil, thought that we had to do something to kill time. He took me and Edgar for a walk to climb a mountain and look at the surroundings around Catemaco. Ofcourse today was the day that I didnt bring my big camera lyckily I had the little one still left in my bag since last nights pub crawl (more about that one in another post). It was unbelivably beautiful and definately worth the walk. Gil told us about the surroundings, what is what but also how its used to look like 15 years ago when everything was covered by rainforest.

Chocolate

Without some of them I am sure that I would not have been as mentally prepared as I was when I arrived here. I have also realised that living 5 years in dormitory and 3 years previously in the tropics puts everything into another perspective. But Jenny there is edible chocloate here: Snickers and reesespieces peanutbutter cupr. I think I will survive here!

Its Carneval
Its Carneval here in Catemaco, my body hates me and it doesn't looks like its getting better. Last night was supposed to be a quite night with no party and going to bed early. Why then was I awake at 2 am with a beer in my hand on the rooftop? I have been asking myself that today. But I shouldn't complain at least I went to bed before 6 am as some others did.
Tonight we have a night out planned. Downside? I have to be up and ready to go to Pipiapan at 6.30 AM.

Plantation
A nursery is being built up in Pipiapan. In the tropics greenhouses are not needed, but instead the plants need to be protected from the harsh sun. So by clearing off the vegetation underneath trees is a great way to use the natures resources for natural shade. As I have understood it these trees will be used to help replant the rainforest and especially in poor villages in the rainforest where logging have caused severe problems for the local community. What I am truly facinated over is the entire construction of these boxes up at the research station. The station is located approx 10 min from a road and hence you need a four wheel drive to make it up there. For five days a fourwheel driv truck was constantly coming up the mountain to deliver the right type of soil needed, then we have the water issue. There is no running water and as you know when planting plants if there is one thing you need its plenty of water. This is transported up the hill several times a day in a fourwheel drive. Then we have the whole construction of the boxes where the seeds are planted. They are built from the leftover logs that were created when clearing out underneath the canopy. If it wouldn't have been because of all the transports made up the hill in cars/trucks that have long past their due date this could have been classified as a really really ecofriendly project. No machines other than the cars have been used while creating this nursery.

My spot
In the house we have a really long and narrow balcony. I always sit on top of the railing that separates the balcony in the middle. Its my place! This is where I sit in the evenings enjoying my dinner, reading or hanging out with my roommates.

Dust
The road home from Pipiapan. Dirt is dragged up in the air when driving down to the road. You get a brownish colour if you get a seat in the back of the car.

I have finally found someone that really really wants to help me with my spansih. In the evenings its now hardtraining on the schedule...

It survived a monkey attack
Min keps blev attakerad idag. Bokstavligt talat.
My hat was attacked today. Literally! I bent forward to do one of my tests and just feel how my hat is ripped of my head by one of the monkeys. He drags it into the cage and starts chewing and ripping in it frantically. When I finally got it back after 10 minutes it was dirty and drewlly, but not a single scratch or hole in it. It now hangs on the roof drying after being cleaned. Monkey drewl is not something I like to wear.

The churchbells
IN Europe it is not always uncommon that you want to hear the churchbells ring. Especially from the big ancient catherdrals that are famour for their churchbells and their ringing. Here in Mexico the bells seem to ring a little at random, but the ringing.
It remind me about when I was young and tried to play drums on the kitchen pots with woodenspoons. Do you hear the noice? Bang bang bang, and no rythm in it either.
This churchbell phenomenon Ihave now noticed in both Mexico City (that has a lot of churchbells let me tell you) and here in Catemaco.
The rooftop terrace
We have a rooftop terrace. Or rooftop and rooftop, the more I look around up here the more sure I become that they just stopped building the last story of the building.

Lizard
When I first arrived in Pipiapan I was so happy to get to see one of these cute little lizards. The males have shining blue sides. After over a week up there I can easily admit that I am getting a little sick of having them every where around me...

Planka
Everyday I have to scratch her, if you stand close to the cage you cna first see the tail coming out pulling my arm closer and when it gets closer she will grab it with her hand and pull it to the area that needs scratching. It is the neck, arm, legs, head, legs, neck. Usually in that order. I will try and see if I can get a recording of her behavior some day. It looks quite funny when she is at it.
The stinkybox
There is alot of things that I need to bring with me up to Pipiapan everyday. With the help of this wonderful box my life gets a lot easier. But there are a couple of things that are extra important for me to remember when I get home everyday.

I dag gick startskottet!
Today i the day when I start my actual data collection for my Master thesis. This time next year it is going to be completed and presented.

If the ants steal your celreal, then you can steal the monkeys?
Last night the ants found my cereal package. Lyckily there was only alittle left of it, but it meant that I wouldn't get any cerela with my yoghurt this morning. Until I realized that I could always steal som fruit loops from my monkeys. I will admit that Fruit Loops and apple yoghurt is not a good combiation, but at least it as ants free.

Cooking
Premiär använde köket igår. Alltså och lagade "riktig" mat. Det blev pasta med tomat-vitvinssås med grönsaker. Smakade riktigt bra faktiskt.
Yesterday it was premier. I used the kitchen to cook a proper dinner for the first time since arriving. I cooked pasta with a tomato-whitewine sauce with veggies. Tasted decent. What you have to be careful with is to make sure that your pots and pans don't slide of their hotplate.

4 days
Vilket ansvar man fick helt plötsligt!
We were without water for 4 days. Apperently now I'm responsible for the waterpump. This involves me starts and stopping it ones a day. What a responsibility I suddenly got!

Piolina
The spider monkey that is impossible to capture on a picture (must have forgotten to pay her fee or something).
Notice that she has her back turned towards me on all the pictures.
Welcome wet season!
Today is the official day when the wetseason starts. We are still waiting on the heavy rains..
The air has cooled down severly though the last couple of hours.

Day 3 without water
It took them three days to figure out what is actually wrong with our water. No it was not a fried water pump that we were told at first, but a cracked pipe.Since its already saturday now we may have water on monday.
I have alredya put my bet down on wednesday...
Thank god the neighburs house belong to us so that we can get water and borrow their shower if you smile sweetly.
